Trails in the Shepard Area: action item

GetAbout meeting on Wednesday, June 13th at the ARC (or survey!) Two trail proposals are very exciting for our neighborhood and we could use as many people as possible to go to this meeting and support project #10 ,the Hominy Trail Connection, and #12, the Shepard to Rollins Trail.   The Hominy Trail Connection would be a very nice way for our neighbors to get to Stephens Lake Park and the new Hominy Trail that is currently being built. The Shepard to Rollins Trail would be a great corridor for university employees and students in our neighborhood to reach the heart of campus with a very safe, short, scenic route.  The proposed trail from the east end of Shepard Blvd. at Old Hwy 63, starting around the small roadside park going down the hill across the Hinkson Creek and connecting to Rollins on the MU campus, would be a great addition to our neighborhood. If you can't make it to the ARC Wednesday evening please go to the city web site and fill out the survey on the same subject. (link below) Barbara Hoppe encouraging us all to go to this meeting and ask them to give priority to our projects.  Furthermore, she recommends they reallocate funds from the Grindstone-McGuire Trail project to the Shepard to Rollins Trail as the East Point neighborhood is not in favor of the Grindstone Trail as it is proposed.   Barbara Hoppe will be out of town and unable to attend but supports these projects. GetAbout Public Meeting and Survey An additional $6 million in funding has been appropriated for the GetAbout project.  A slate of 19 potential capital projects has been created.   These projects were rated by the GetAbout Advisory Board, the Bike/Ped Commission and the Parks Commission, and listed in priority.  Details of the projects can be found by going towww.GetAboutColumbia.com under “infrastructure updates” The City Council authorized staff to proceed with the five that had the highest priority ratings.    $2.6 million remains after subtracting the cost of the five capital projects and non-capital expenses (project mgmt, design, etc).   The City is seeking your input on which of the remaining 14 projects to fund using the remaining $2.6 million.    If you are unable to attend the meeting, please take the on-line survey, available on the City web site: www.gocolumbiamo.com  under  “New and Featured”.  The on-line survey will be available for two weeks. The proposed additional projects are: 6 - County House Trail Phase 2 west - $445,000 – Connects from Rollins at Rock Creek Drive to County House Trail phase 1, mostly on City easements   7 - Clark Lane Sidewalk, East - $325,800 –  Connects from Ballinger to Woodland (near White Castle), north side of Clark Lane 8 – Providence and Nifong Bike Lanes - $309,300 – Improve shoulders and add bike lanes on Providence from Stadium to Green Meadows and on Nifong from Bethel to Scott.  9 – Hinkson Creek Trail, Conley to 63 - $555,000 -  Connects from the pending extension of Conley Road to Clark Laneand then on to Hwy 63 near Home Depot.  10  – Hominy Trail Connection - $180,000 -  Connects pending Hominy trail to Shepard Neighborhood at Pepper Tree Ln.  11 – Wabash Walkway (COLT RR trail) - $544,000 -  Pedway along COLT railroad from Columbia College to Paris road at Business Loop 70 12 – Shepard to Rollins, ($1,740,000) -  Trail connects from Rollins St. east, crossing Hinkson Creek and climbing to the intersection of Old 63 and Shepard Blvd. 13– West Blvd Sidewalk - $567,400 – Sidewalk on the west side from Westwinds to Broadway 14– Clark Lane Sidewalk, West - $410,300 -  Sidewalk on the north side from Paris to Eastwood  15– Cosmo Park Trail - $1,220,000 -  Trail connects from Bear Creek Trail at Creasy Springs thru Cosmo Park to the pending intersection improvements at Stadium and I-70  16– Old Plank Road Sidewalk - $150,000 – Sidewalk on the north side, Providence to Tessa Way  17– Elleta Sidewalk - $45,500 -  completing short sidewalk gap on the south side at Range Line  18– Vandiver to Rice Road Trail - $980,000 -  Trail from the east end of Vandiver, crossing Hinkson Creek to Rice Road  19– County House Trail Phase 2, East - $593,000 -  Connects from Spring Valley Road to County House Trail Phase 1 via Conan Drive For more information, contact Ted Curtis at 573 874-7250

Upcoming Events

Upcoming Events of Interest:

SBNA Garage Sale

The annual SBNA garage sales are set for Saturday, June 16th.  All area residents are encouraged to participate in this fun way to repurpose our treasures and connect with neighbors. Contact Susie Robison if you plan to participate at robison33@mchsi.com.  This will ensure that directional signage will point the way to your family's sale.  The neighborhood will pay for a general sale ad in the Columbia Daily Tribune.  An ad has already been placed on Craigslist.com.  Please consider other ways you might be able to help promote these sales to our community members.

SBNA Picnic

The annual SBNA picnic is set for 6pm on Saturday, August 18th at Shepard Park.  Looking forward to getting together again and seeing how the kids have grown!  Should be a fun time to chat and discuss yummy recipes.  Contact Rieanne Brinkmann if you have any questions or concerns at rieannem@gmail.com.
